“I hear the beep bop through my brain” sings Andy Bell, as the new single from Erasure kicks off. Musically and lyrically they are setting the scene for their incredible new single. “Hey Now (Think I Got A Feeling)” is a small taste of their new album, Neon, expected on August 21, 2020. This is the first new music since 2017’s World Be Gone. And once again Bell and Vincent Clarke have come up with the goods. Clarke continues to explore his electro abilities and one cannot but admire how far Clarke has come since the early 1980s. Together, since 1985, Clarke and Bell have produced some of the best electro pop/dance songs released. This new song itself is a strong pop/dance song with a strong melody, catchy chorus and Bell’s strong vocals.
Erasure never let you down. You get exactly what you expect. Finely crafted pop songs set to an infectious dance beat. “Hey Now (Think I Got A Feeling)” lives up to expectation. In the old days, this would have been the ideal seven inch single followed up with a couple of 12 inch remixes. These days, it instantly gets the remix treatment before you are completely familiar with the actual song.
There are six remixes by three mixers on this EP. Basically an edit and full version by each. Phillip George’s Remix (Edit) gets the ball rolling, and while it is perfect for a club, I can’t help but feel it has a retro 1990s feeling. My favourite remix comes courtesy Daybreakers. They maintain the strong melody while bringing in the electro dance element. While it tips its hat to the 1980s, it is very current and exciting. NIMMO rounds out the set who slow the action down with a groovy beat.
But at the heart of the matter is the song. As a song “Hey Now (Think I Got A Feeling)” is an engaging and enchanting song. It is a song that nests into your brain and is stuck there. While the remixes enhance the song and spotlight different aspects to it, it is really the song that is the core. Bell and Clarke know this and continue to deliver quality, well crafted pop songs within the electronica arena.
