Residents ‘quids in’ from recycling

32 lucky St Helens residents have discovered the benefits of recycling –
after being announced winners of St Helens Council’s Recycling Rewards
scheme for November.

Funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government, a winner and runner up in each of the 16 wards across the borough each received  £50 or £25 worth of vouchers to spend in leading businesses around the town, on family experiences or local charity donations – in recognition of their improved recycling efforts.

Last month’s winners include Louise Ford of Rainhill, Christine Potts from
Earlestown and John Kirkham of West Park, who all claimed £50 worth of M&S vouchers; Lesley Field from Eccleston and Geoff Callaghan from the town centre who opted for B&Q vouchers worth £50 – while Windle’s Adam Westhead favoured the £50 Cineworld voucher.

Each week, participating residents log their recycling activity online.
This, along with weighbridge, records shows the wards and individual
households that make the most effort. The more you recycle the greater
chance of receiving a reward.

St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Green Smart and Sustainable Borough, Councillor Seve Gomez Aspron said: “Congratulations to the first batch of winners who have realised just how rewarding recycling can be – and hopefully it will pave the way for more people to join in on this already
well received initiative, which has so far led to 20-30 tonnes more waste
being recycled every week.

“If you haven’t signed up yet, get involved – you’ll be helping help us to
protect the environment and earning exclusive discounts and vouchers.”

Residents can earn points as a result of their community’s (ward’s)
improved performance compared with the previous month. Their individual
points tally will also increase if they take part in recycling activities
(for details go to www.sthelens.gov.uk/recyclingrewards). These include
everything from recycling food waste, to recording your own recycling
activities on a weekly basis – or simply telling the council about the
positive actions you’ve taken to recycle.

How to join the scheme

To start earning points and discounts, residents will need to activate
their account. They can do this online by using the activation code
included in the welcome pack. You can also use the free council app (search St Helens in your app store) or simply call 01744 676789 to request a freepost activation form.
